Master of Light

SACRED SONG SERIES  | DECEMBER

Collaborative contemporary chant project designed to promote healing through music and mantra.

Drum roll please.

At last, the final edition of the Sacred Song Series vibrates.

We produced 12 chants in 12 months, gathering over 40 local musicians to promote meditation and healing through music.  Thank to listeners, supporters, and musicians. Your passion and devotion is inspiring. Hope you've enjoyed this project as much as we have. From my heart to yours.... om shanti.

“Let your life shine. Do not hide your light under a bushel. Do not turn back in regret. Rather go inward, source inward, for your light, for your love, for your heart’s desires, your life’s path, your integrity, and bring forth the presence of your being.”

Made of the Earth

SACRED SONG SERIES  | AUGUST

Collaborative contemporary chant project designed to promote healing through music and mantra.

'We are made of the Earth' chant inspires the spirit to align to Earth's natural rhythm and sound of nature.  Whenever human circumstances or stressors toss spirit off blance we must return to nature.  Flowers don't question when it is time to bloom.  May we follow their lead and sing to their vibrational frequency to recalibrate our bodies, minds and spirit to our natural state of being.  It's that simple.

Open Your Ears, Listen

SACRED SONG SERIES  | JULY

Collaborative contemporary chant project designed to promote healing through music and mantra.

Music is a common denominator in most of my relationships,  but especially in my work as a music therapist with children who have special needs.  Music bridges the gap between typical communication, social norms, and sensory/behavioral needs. I am grateful to witness the power of music daily and how it connects us to one another. Open your Ears is a chant  inspired by my students and the teachings they offer.

I work with a little girl who has limited vision and verbal communication. She also has impeccable sense of rhythm and pitch. One day during session, I tried to redirect her away from the drums she was currently playing  to sit and participate in a highly structured intervention.  Aware of my agenda,  I paused for a moment to observe her with a smile on her face, playing a complicated rhythm on the djembe, embodying joy.  In that moment I was reminded of something my yoga teacher said about listening to the breath during asana practice.  Information gleaned from the breath is reflected in how we are able to maintain a smooth steady cadence.  Listening to the breath is a practice that extends into personal relationships to offer deeper understanding, awareness and overall connection.

Often I find my brain wanting to control situations, which can interrupt magic in the making.  Music, like the breath, offers the brain a tool to live in the moment as it makes sense of each note sequentially.  I attribute yoga for opening my ears to be more present simply by listening without  the need to craft a response or answer.

Open your ears. Listen to what your students, teachers, co-workers, parents, lovers, or friends have to communicate you and you will open yourself to love.

SACRED SONG SERIES  | JUNE

Collaborative contemporary chant project designed to promote healing through music and mantra.

Inspiration for this month's chant is grounded in personal experience with death and questions asked by artist, Dario Robleto. In a conversation with Krista Tippett of OnBeing, Robleto says:  "Loss is about letting go. But that we let go with the hope that others will grab hold. These objects ask very human moral questions. What right do we have to forget? What do we owe to each other’s memories?" Our children may not know their grandparents, but the parent holds their spirit, their memories, breathing life to their existence. When our time comes to return to the earth, may those we impact recall memories of our spirit so that we may live.  So go make memories. Each breath holds the potential for making a memory.

A message from our guest composer, Vanessa: 'I wrote this chant a few months ago while I was out walking with my baby daughter. I was walking in our local park and the wind was blowing and there were beautiful clouds in the sky and suddenly I was so aware of the sweetness of the moment. There's something so wonderful about spending time with a baby in that they are completely absorbed in what is right before them- they are so fully in the present moment. How delightful it is to stop and realize that your life is right here, right now, with this breath. I want to practice this kind of presence.'

Be here now, be here now
Your life is here with this breath you breathe
Under the sky and under the trees
Be here now, be here now

“I am joy, I am light, I am winter, I am night
Sun goes up, sun goes down. Earth she spins me round n’ round I am!

I am here, I am whole, one time round the singing bowl
Sun goes up, sun goes down. Earth she spins me round n’ round I am!

I am fire, I am flame, I am water all the same
Sun goes up, sun goes down. Earth she spins me round n’ round I am!

I am love, I am free, nothing else I’d rather be
Sun goes up, sun goes down. Earth she spins me round n’ round I am!

I am...

“Take my burden lay it down, I don’t need it hanging ‘round.
Take my worries lay it down, I don’t need it hanging round.
Take my troubles lay it down, I don’t need it hanging round.
I don’t need nothing, ‘cuz happiness sits within.

This month's new moon in Pisces aligns with a Solar Eclipse and Spring Equinox making it a powerful time to start something new.  This chant intends to re-calibrate the mind by ridding thoughts of desire, expectation, anxiety, and need for outside substances.  By taking a more active approach in cutting ties to habitual thought patterns, my hope is that as you chant or listen you may start to feel lighter.  Pisces also concludes the zodiac calendar making it a pivitol time to set intentions, strengthening new thought paterns that serve your highest intention.

Kirtan is a devotional practice no matter what spiritual path or religion you seek. Experiencing kirtan is all about connection to spirit; whatever spirit means to you. Kirtan stems from Bhakti tradition. Bhakti = devotion. The Hindu Goddess Saraswati is attributed with being the founder of Kirtan, for she is the goddess of learning, knowledge, music, and the arts.  Saraswait sails down the ganges siting upon her white swan, clad in a pure white saree. The beginning notes of the Indian scale are named in her honor: Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Da Ni Sa.

Heart is Home

SACRED SONG SERIES  |  JANUARY

Collaborative contemporary chant project designed to promote healing through music and mantra. First post of a year long project. A new chant will be released each new moon. Heart is home was written in meditation on being content and feeling "at home" in this body and mind. Wherever you are,  peace.

“Peace in my heart, my heart is my home. Share in the love, no more shall I roam. No more.”

Leave a comment, share. sing. meditate. write. raise your vibrations from the inside out.
